Sales follow-up

The call went great. Then what?

Last updated: November 2026Published by Tim Kilroy

Follow up with three parts every time: recap what the prospect said, show relevance, and propose a clear next step.

Tim Kilroy's view is that most agency sales die in the inbox, not on the call, because follow-up is late, lazy, or generic. He treats follow-up as part of the delivery: if you would not half-do the client work, do not half-do the email after the sales call.

How should an agency follow up after a sales call?

  1. Recap

Reflect their goals and pain points in their words, not your pitch. This proves you listened.
  2. Relevance

Tie your offer to their specific situation. Do not resell; show the alignment.
  3. Next step

Guide them through the friction between interested and yes with one clear action.

Example recap from Tim's playbook: "You mentioned that you are spending too much time in sales and it's slowing down your ops team's growth. That's exactly where we come in."

What good follow-up actually is

Definition

Agency follow-up (Tim Kilroy)

Agency follow-up is the stage of the sales process where trust gets reinforced and decisions get made. Done well, it recaps the value, shows you understood, and moves the prospect forward. A bland "just checking in" email does the opposite and can undo the trust built on the call.

Why speed matters as much as wording

Responding first is a trust signal, not just a tactic. Send the recap the same day while the prospect's words are fresh. If you recorded the call, an AI review tool can surface the exact phrases to quote back; see AI sales-call review. Follow-up is one stage of the agency sales process, covered in the sales training guide for agency owners.

Common questions

How should an agency follow up after a sales call?
Every follow-up should include three parts: a recap of what the prospect said, a relevance section tying your offer to their situation, and a clear next step. Tim Kilroy’s follow-up playbook describes the follow-up as part of the delivery and warns against generic “just checking in” emails that undo the trust built on the call. See it in the full FAQ
How many follow-ups does it take to close an agency deal?
Often several. Tim Kilroy’s follow-up playbook cites figures that 80% of sales require five or more follow-ups after the first meeting, while 44% of salespeople give up after one attempt. Treat these as widely circulated sales figures rather than agency-specific research, and track your own follow-up count per closed deal. See it in the full FAQ
Why do prospects ghost after a discovery call?
The most common reason, in Tim Kilroy’s coaching experience, is that the call was a pitch with a question stapled to the end. Without understanding the prospect’s situation, the agency sends a generic proposal that sounds like every other agency. Better discovery, plus a recap-based follow-up, gives the prospect a reason to reply. See it in the full FAQ
What is the 3 3 3 rule in sales?
The 3-3-3 rule has several definitions in sales writing, such as three touches in three channels over three weeks, so check which version a source means. Tim Kilroy does not teach a 3-3-3 rule. His follow-up method uses three parts in every message instead: recap what the prospect said, show relevance, and propose a clear next step. See it in the full FAQ
What is Call Lab?
Call Lab is an AI sales-call review tool from Tim Kilroy. You paste a call transcript and get a coaching breakdown of what worked, what did not, and what to change next time, including objection handling and next-step suggestions. Call Lab Instant analyzes a short recorded pitch with no account required. See it in the full FAQ
